Chapter 17: The Dye Works
I turned the coin over in my fingers.
A sloe branch, and a berry.
"He owns sloe woods," I said. "Upriver."
"Two thousand acres," said Bertrand. "And a dye works on the bank below them. It pays him very well."
"What does a dye works make?"
He looked at me.
"Blues," he said slowly. "Yellows. And greens."
"You don't paint a leaf with verdigris unless somebody's made the verdigris," I said. "Somebody sells it to Father by the barrel."
Bertrand picked up the coin and put it in his waistcoat pocket.
"I can't send a magistrate upriver on a pamphlet and a coin," he said. "The Duke would hear of it before the boat left the quay."
"Then don't send a magistrate."
"Miss Pellow."
"Good night, Your Highness," I said.
Blanche was sitting up in bed with a book of mosses when I came in.
I told her about the coin.
She closed the book.
"I've always wanted to see a dye works," she said. "For my herbarium."
"Blanche."
"Woad and weld and madder, all growing in one place. It's practically my duty."
