Chapter 30: Fittings
The King set the day himself.
"The garlands are still up," he said. "We had a midsummer feast with no wedding in it. We'll have midsummer again, a week on Saturday, and do it properly."
Nobody argued.
The palace seamstress came to our rooms on Monday with pins in her mouth and two bolts of silk.
She was a small, fierce woman who'd dressed the late Queen, and she hated my hands on sight.
"Gloves," she said, round the pins. "Long ones. Elbow."
"No."
"Miss Pellow, your fingers are brown."
"They're going to be brown in every portrait for the rest of my life," I said. "They might as well start now."
She looked at Blanche for help.
Blanche was standing on a stool in pale green silk, holding her arms out.
"Don't look at me," said my sister. "I want a fern on mine."
"A fern."
"Maidenhair. On the bodice. Upside down."
The seamstress took all the pins out of her mouth at once.
