Chapter 15: Two Million

Silvan's POV

Lacey took the pink envelope from Camille and opened it with her thumb.

I had been standing behind her with my hands still warm from hers, and I did not move.

The check inside was made out to Lacey Whitfield for two million dollars.

Gerald stood up and put his head against my knee.

"It's for a statement," Camille said, pleasantly. "On camera, at the fair. You say what you saw. You say he was aggressive."

"What I saw was a dog on a lawn," Lacey said.

"You screamed. It's on video."

"I screamed at a Doberman, who was grinning. I can scream at a grinning Doberman and tell the truth."

"Honey, all it takes is the word aggressive. You say it once."

Lacey read the check again, front and back.

"What would I invoice you for?" she said.

Camille's smile did not change. "I'm sorry?"

"What would this two million be the cost of? Say the word is free. I'd be charging you two million dollars for a thing that cost me nothing, and it wouldn't even be true."

"Silvan offered you ten," Camille said.

"He offered. I asked for four hundred and twelve dollars and sixty cents."

"And did you get it?"

"I got five hundred, and then I gave him back eighty-seven forty."

Camille looked at me over Lacey's shoulder, and her eyes were pleasant and flat.

"That's not what the dog cost," Lacey said, and she folded the envelope in half and gave it back.

Camille took it, slowly, with both hands.

"You'll think about it," she said.

"I won't."

"You'll be there Saturday week."

"I'll be there," Lacey said. "I'll say exactly what happened."
