Chapter 17: The Road Inn
The inn at the last crossroads before the capital had one good room, and it had a mirror.
It was a tall glass in a carved frame, bolted to the wall beside the washstand.
The innkeeper had hung a lamp beside it for ladies who liked to see their hair.
Rina saw it the moment she walked in.
Then she saw Kaldrith in it, standing behind her in the doorway with his shoulders nearly touching the lintel.
On the eighty-seventh night of the season, with the capital still hours off in the dark, she looked at the two of them.
She thought, we look like a pair.
"They put us in the room next to the Saint's," he said. "The walls are thin."
"Then we'll be quiet."
"You have never once been quiet."
"I can try."
He shut the door and set the bar.
She stood in front of the mirror in the plain blue travelling dress.
He came up behind her and set his hands on her shoulders.
She watched him do it.
His hands were so big they covered the whole curve of her shoulder, the black sleeve of his coat against the blue of her dress.
In the glass, his silver hair fell around her.
"Look," he said, low.
"I'm looking."
"Tell me what you see."
She met her own grey eyes and then his amber ones in the glass.
"A very tall man," she said, "who's about to ruin my hair."
He laughed against her neck.
Then his hands slid down her arms to the laces at her back, and his eyes held hers in the mirror the entire time.
"Watch," he said.
The dress opened.
It slid off her shoulders and down her hips, and she stepped out of it, and the chemise went after.
Then she was standing in front of a tall glass in the lamplight with nothing on at all.
