Chapter 13: The Note

Tilda slept eighteen hours on Dot's couch.

Dot checked her pulse every hour and said the same word each time.

"Fine."

By Wednesday night my sister was awake, clear-eyed, and eating toast with both hands around it.

She cried once, quietly, into the blanket Dot had wrapped around her.

"I'll say it," she told me. "All of it. I practiced the other speech for nine nights. I can practice this one."

I believed her.

That was the mistake.

My own body had started to turn on me around noon.

My hands shook, and a cold sweat kept breaking out at my hairline.

I had skipped one white pill, and the pill had been in me every night for three years.

Dot watched me from across the cottage kitchen and said nothing.

At nine she put a bowl of chicken soup in front of me.

"Eat," she said. "Everything."

I took three spoonfuls.

The soup tasted of salt, and under the salt there was something bitter that coated my tongue.

I put the spoon down.

"Dot."

"Eat your soup, honey."

"What's in it?"

She didn't answer fast enough.

I pushed the bowl away so hard that it slopped across the table.

"What did you put in my food?"

"A quarter of one of your mother's pills," Dot said. "I found the bottle in your duffel bag. The label says what it is. It's a sedative, Jo, and you've had it every night for three years."

"Stop it cold and you get shaking, then sweats, then seizures if you're unlucky. I've seen it on my floor, in the ER. I wasn't going to let it happen to you in my kitchen."

I stood up.

My legs were not steady, and I was furious in a way that felt clean.

"I told Anson the rule on Saturday. Nobody decides what I take."

"I know what you said."

"You were standing right there, eating a sandwich. You heard me."
