Chapter 10: The Council at the Stone
The border stone stood on a gravel island in the middle of the river, a gray pillar twice the height of a man.
By noon on the sixth day both packs were there.
Duskmoor lined the east side in gray. Greywater lined the west in brown and green. Between them the stone cast a long shadow across the gravel.
Eight elders sat on benches at its foot, four from each pack.
I walked out over the plank bridge with Linnet in my arms and Torin at my left shoulder.
On the far side of the stone, Delphine sat beside Aldric in a dove-colored dress with Rowan on her lap.
She looked calm and lovely, and every eye on the island went to her first.
Aldric sat a full arm's length from her. Nobody missed that.
The oldest elder of Duskmoor stood. He was bent with age, and his white eyebrows hid his eyes.

"She took her own daughter," Torin said.
"You will speak when the council asks."
"Then ask me soon, Elder. I'm a patient man for about another minute."
A ripple of laughter ran down the Greywater side.
The old elder did not smile. "Luna."
Delphine rose with Rowan against her shoulder.
"I will be brief," she said. "I did not want a council. I wanted my family whole."
She spoke for a long time and spoke well.
She said she had loved me. She said I had been fragile since the first birth and that she had hoped to give me a home. She said she had carried me through a hard pregnancy with her own hands, and that when I ran, she feared for my life and my child's.
