Chapter 47: One Year
"Nine o'clock," Augusto said on the phone. "We'll have a chair."
He hung up first.
I sat at Pasquale's kitchen table in the dark until the sky over the fig tree went gray.
At seven Damiano came down the back stairs with Maddie on his shoulder.
He saw the trace paper flattened on the table in front of me, with the crease marks all through our gate.
He stopped.
"I called him," I said.
He put Maddie in her bouncer on the floor and made the coffee, and his hands were steady the whole time.
That was how I knew how angry he was.
"When?"
"Three-thirty. After her bottle."
"You called Augusto Bellanca at three-thirty in the morning to tell him you'd take the chair."
"I told him I'd come to the table. I didn't tell him what I'd say."
He set a cup in front of me.
"What are you going to say?"
"I'm going to tell them my price."
He stood there with the coffee pot in his hand.
Pasquale came in in his bathrobe, took one look at both of us, picked up the baby and walked straight back out.
"Lucia," Damiano said. "You don't know what that room is."
