Chapter 7: Marigolds

He opened the door before I knocked.

It was eleven on Sunday night, and I was standing on his porch in River Oaks with marigold petals still caught in my hair.

I had come straight from my mother's table.

The altar was still lit in her front room, with its four rows of candles.

Orange flowers lay heaped around my father's photograph, and I had not been able to stay in that house another minute.

I had not been able to go to my own bed either.

Royce looked at me in the porch light.

He saw the petals and the red eyes, and he said nothing at all.

He took my hand and drew me inside.

The house was huge and dark and nearly empty.

It smelled of old brick and cold air, and nobody lived in it, though he slept there.

He shut the door and locked it, and I turned around and pushed him against the wood.

"Don't talk," I said.

"All right," he said.

"I don't want to be gentle," I said.

"Then don't be."

I kissed him.

I opened his mouth with mine and kissed him hard enough to taste blood.

His hands came up into my hair, and the petals fell around our feet.

His right hand slid down my back and found the hem of my black dress and pushed it up my thigh.

He stopped.

I had pulled the dress on at my mother's house with nothing under it but a bra.

"Mari," he said, in a low, shaken voice.

"Yes," I said.

He pressed me back against the door and slid two fingers between my legs, and found me soaking.

I gasped against his mouth.

He stroked me slowly, all the way up, and circled my clit once, twice, until my knees began to go.

"That's for the stairs," he said. "So you have something to count."

He lifted me.

I wrapped my legs around his waist, and he carried me up a long flight of stairs with my mouth on his neck.

"Count them," he said, breathing hard.

"What?"

"The steps. You count things for me."

"One," I said, laughing against his skin. "Two. Three."
