Chapter 13: The Board Lunch

The Thayer Foundation board ate lunch on the first Wednesday of every month, in the private room on the mezzanine of the Thayer Grand Hotel.

Warner had told me that my first week in his mother's house, and I had saved it in my phone.

Caleb walked me as far as the revolving door and stopped.

"Say the word and I'm coming in with you," he said.

"If you come in, she gets to call it a second break-in."

"I know." His jaw worked. "Then I'll wait in the lobby and be loud."

"Please don't be loud."

"I'll be a little loud."

I laughed, and then I went in alone.

The doorman knew my face from the gala and sent me up without asking whether I was expected.

I was expected.

Twelve people sat at a long table with white cloths and plates of salmon, and Marguerite sat at the head in navy and pearls.

Warner sat at her right hand, and the chair beside him had a place card that read Stephanie Marrin.

I had left the tracker on my phone running on purpose, so she would see me coming.

"Stevie, dear," Marguerite said. "Sit. We saved you a seat."

I stayed standing.

I took the cream envelope from my coat and laid it on the cloth beside the card.

"This came to Caleb Hurley on Monday," I said. "It says he owes the Foundation's family office $149,400 on a note my father signed. I'd like the board to hear how that note got made."

A woman in a green scarf at the far end put down her fork.
