Caleb's POV

The bank gave Donna Marrin her husband's signature in a sealed envelope, and she carried it out in both hands.

The branch manager had walked it to the counter herself.

"Frank brought us coffee cake every Christmas," she said. "I'd know that F anywhere."

The card had CERTIFIED COPY stamped across it in red.

Donna held it up on the sidewalk next to the photo of the note on her phone.

"That man could not make a straight capital letter to save his life," she said. "Whoever did the note had a ruler."

My phone buzzed with a text from the lawyer.

Expert says not the same hand. Says it's enough to get a judge's attention but not enough to win. We need the check or we need Gus.

I read it twice and put the phone away.

I drove Donna back to Dunmore Street with the card on her lap.

Stevie had the studio window open and flour on both forearms.

She was making pie crust on the kitchen counter, because Donna liked it on Thursdays, and that was all she said about it.

On the table beside the sugar jar sat Warner's cream envelope.

It was still sealed.

Donna saw it and stopped in the doorway.

"Well, open it," she said.

"No."

"Stephanie."

"I know what's in it, Mom." Stevie did not look up from the dough. "It's the diner, a new kidney and a roof. Every page of it comes with Warner attached."

"Might as well know the number."

"I don't want to know the number."

Donna looked at me.

I kept my face still and said nothing.
