Chapter 23: My Terms
I came down the stairs with my flannel buttoned wrong and Jesse behind me, and forty people turned to look.
Nobody said anything about my buttons.
Marla had already set the ham on the long table.
She had also set out three pies, a pot of beans and a stack of paper plates.
She gave me a look over her glasses that said she knew exactly what I'd been doing upstairs.
The gray-bearded man stood with his hat in his hands.
"Miss Rawlins," he said. "We came to hear your terms."
"Danielle," I said. "Or Dani. I've been Miss Rawlins to bankers, and it's never ended well."
A few men smiled.
I walked to the head of the table, and I did not sit in Hoyt's chair.
I stood next to it with one hand on the back.
"Here's what I'll do," I said. "The club can stay. One dollar a year, like my father wrote it, on a new lease, signed in front of all of you."
A sound went through the room, low and relieved.
"There are four conditions."
"Go on," said the gray-bearded man.
"One. The building fund gets paid back. Hoyt's lake house goes on the market this week. Every one of you gets your hundred and fifty a month back, and what's left over goes to Marla's kitchen, because she's fed you for nineteen years on a prayer."
Marla made a noise into her dish towel.
"Two. Nobody who puts a woman in a room to be humiliated sits at this table again. I don't care what patch he wears."
The table went very quiet.
"Three. Lacey Tuttle has the bar, at a salary, and her name on the schedule, and anyone who calls her anything but Lacey can say it to me."
