Chapter 7: What I Paid For
On Friday night I took back everything I had paid for.
I did it at nine o'clock, when the bar was full, because Hoyt had taught me that a thing done in front of people is a thing done.
I brought three of my father's old crew in a flatbed with a cherry picker.
I brought a folder, too, with receipts in it.
The Sawtooth Sons stopped talking as soon as the front door opened.
Over the bar, on the wall I had framed, hung the neon sign.
It said SAWTOOTH SONS in red and white script, and I had bought it myself from a shop in Spokane for four thousand dollars.
"Evening," I said. "I'm collecting my sign."
Hoyt was at the end of the bar with a beer.
He raised his eyebrows.
"Dani. Sweetheart. It's a club night."
"I know. I have the invoice."
I held it up.
My name was printed on it, and the card number was mine.
"I have the invoices for the tap system, too," I said. "And the front door hardware, and the six cameras, and the walk-in cooler compressor. I'd like those back."
Somebody laughed nervously.
Behind the bar, Lacey went very still.
She was in a clean black shirt, with her hair pulled back and a rag in her hand.
She had put on lipstick to pour beer, and it was perfect.
"Excuse me," I said to her. "I need those taps."
"Dani." Her voice shook. "Can we not do this here?"
"You don't get to say 'here,' Lacey."
