Chapter 20: The Porch on Sundays
Ramona's POV
He took the no.
I watched him take it from the porch, with my mug on the rail and my daughter's hand on my arm.
He nodded once, put his helmet back on the handlebars, and said, "Good night, Ro."
He didn't argue, and he didn't sigh.
He turned the bike around and rode back down the drive at a walking pace, with the tail light getting smaller.
"Mom," Faye said. "He wasn't going to push."
"I know."
"Then why did you say no?"
"Because it was my answer to give, and I wanted to hear how it sounded."
"How did it sound?"
"Lonely," I said.
The next morning Birdie arrived at seven with a casserole and no appointment.
She cut it in my kitchen and put a square in front of me.
"I came to talk about your husband."
"He's not my husband this month."
"He's not your husband on paper, that's true. The petition's still sitting in a drawer."
"I know where it is."
"Do you want me to file it?"
I opened my mouth, and nothing came out.
Birdie let that sit.
Faye came in from the porch with her hair in a towel, and she sat down at the table like a lawyer.
"Mom, I have something to say."
"Is this an ambush?"
"Yes."
Birdie nodded approval.
"Dad rode off last night without one word of argument," Faye said. "He said good night like you'd given him a present."
"He did."
"What more do you need him to do? Lose a limb?"
"I don't need him to lose anything."
"Then what?"
"I need him to stay when I stop watching."
Nobody said anything.
Birdie pulled out the third chair and sat.
"Ro, I was married to the old president for thirty-one years," she said. "He did one thing wrong in all of that time and it was a big one. Do you know what I did?"
