Chapter 21: Until Morning
I walked down to the workshop at eleven that night in my robe, with nothing under it.
The door was open, as he'd promised.
The light was off.
Boone sat on the edge of the cot with his boots beside him and his shirt unbuttoned, and he stood up so fast the cot rattled.
"Ro. Is something wrong?"
"No."
"The baby?"
"The baby's fine."
I shut the door behind me.
I turned the lock, and it clicked loud in the quiet.
He looked at the lock, and then at me.
"I said nothing else until I say," I told him. "I'm saying."
His throat moved.
"You're sure."
"Don't ask me that."
"I'm not asking. I'm telling you I'm scared to move."
"Then don't. I'll do it."
I crossed the floor and put my hands on his chest, on the warm skin under the open shirt.
The tape on his ribs was gone, but the bruises were still yellow.
I touched them gently, one at a time.
He breathed in through his teeth.
"I've missed this," he said, hoarse. "I didn't know how much until your hands were on me."
"Twenty-two years you slept in the back room."
"I know."
"Twenty-two years I waited up."
"I know, Ro."
"You don't get to say it again. You get to make up for it."
I pulled his face down and kissed him.
It was hard and angry and nothing like gentle, and he made a sound into my mouth and wrapped his good arm around my waist.
I bit his lip.
He pulled me against him, and I felt how hard he was through his jeans, pressed against my belly.
"Take your clothes off," I said.
He did it with shaking hands, shirt first, then belt, then jeans.
I let the robe fall open and slide off my shoulders.
He stared at me.
My breasts were heavier than they had been, and the hair at my temples was gray in the lamplight from the window, and the small hard curve of the baby showed under my navel.
