Chapter 4: Keep All of It
I slid the pink folder under my jacket and walked straight across the waiting room.
Eleven people sat in the chairs, and every one of them looked up.
"Boone," I said.
He turned around with his hand still on Tawny's back.
"Ro. This isn't the place."
"You said you'd have the papers drawn up Monday."
"I've been busy."
"I wasn't."
I opened my tote bag and took out the envelope from my lawyer's office.
I had picked it up the morning after he left, and I had been carrying it ever since, waiting for the right moment.
The right moment was now, in front of strangers, while he had his hand on the woman who had taken my life apart.
I held it out to him.
"Divorce petition. The house and the land stay with me, as the deed says. We split the savings. Faye is twenty-two, so there's nothing to fight over."
The receptionist stopped typing.
An old man in the corner lowered his newspaper.
Tawny stepped closer to Boone and slid her fingers between his.
"Baby, you don't have to do this here," she said.
"I do," he said, and took the envelope from me.
I waited for him to read the first page.
He didn't open it.
He walked to the reception desk, took the pen on the chain, flipped to the last page and signed his name.
He signed it in one stroke.
"Sir, you might want to read that," the receptionist said.
"No need."
He turned around and held the papers out to me.
I took them, and my fingers were not steady.
