Chapter 10: Suspended

By morning, the clip had two million views.

People had slowed it down. People had zoomed in on Beau's hand in my hair.

People had put it side by side with Skye's kiss on the ice and asked, Who did it better?

Most of them said Beau.

That was somehow worse.

At eight, there was a knock on my door.

Beau stood on the landing with two fancy lattes and a white paper bag.

"I spent the coffee card," he said. "Don't read the comments."

"I've read all of them."

"Did you read the one that says I look like a sad lumberjack?"

"I wrote that one."

He laughed and came in.

He'd never been inside my apartment.

It was one room and a kitchenette, with my laptop on the floor and my old skating medals in a shoebox on the windowsill.

He looked around at it.

His phone rang before he'd even sat down.

He looked at the screen, and his face changed.

"Callister," he answered.

He listened for a long time.

"Noon," he said. "Sure."

He hung up.

"That was the owner's office," he said. "I've been asked to come in."

"Because of the clip."

"I'm coming with you."

"Brecken. No."

"You didn't hide me at the game." I picked up my keys. "I'm not letting you walk in there alone."

The Rainmakers' offices are on the top floor of the practice facility out by the airport.

I'd worked there for four years.

My badge still opened the side door, which told me how fast they'd planned to replace me.

The owner's office was all glass and reclaimed wood, with a framed jersey on every wall.

He was there, a silver-haired man in a fleece vest, behind his desk.

The general manager was there.

Dane was there, leaning on the windowsill in sweats with a coffee, like he'd wandered in by accident.
