Chapter 29: Fallout

Beau didn't say he forgave him.

He didn't say anything for a long time.

Then he nodded once.

"Okay," he said. "I heard you."

He turned around and limped back down the center aisle toward me.

He didn't look back at Dane.

Four hundred people watched him go.

Halfway up the aisle, somebody started clapping.

It was the ladder-rack dad.

Then the bug's mother. Then our forty-one, all over the room. Then people who weren't ours at all.

Beau reached me and took my hand.

The security guards stepped out of our way.

Nobody arrested anybody.

At the back of the room, Peg had put her church hat back on.

"Well," she said, loud enough for the whole last row. "That's one way to sell a book."

By midnight the clip had been played on every sports channel in North America.

On Friday, the league announced a formal investigation into the hit seven years ago, and suspended Dane Hollings for the coming season while it ran.

On Friday afternoon, his publisher announced that Clean Ice would not be published.
