Chapter 10: The Anchor Room
"Cut the track," Linus said to the sound man. "Leave the guitar."
The Anchor Room on Saturday night held three hundred people, and every one of them was facing the stage.
Griffin Moyer stood in a spotlight in a white jacket, in the middle of the second verse of "Paper Tigers", mouthing along to a backing track that had been recorded in a studio.
He sang it well.
He sang it with total confidence, and the crowd sang along on the chorus, and a girl near the front was crying.
Linus had been standing in the wings for ten minutes with his hands in his pockets, and he had counted every lie.
The sound man looked at him, and at the large bald man at his shoulder.
He cut the track.
The music dropped out.
Griffin's voice, alone, hung in the air for half a line, thin and unsupported.
He stopped.
A murmur ran through the room.
Linus walked onto the stage.
He took the acoustic guitar from its stand, and the light hit him full in the face.
He heard the crowd draw breath.
Then he stepped up to the mic.
"Hi," he said. "I wrote this one."
Griffin stared at him with his mouth open.
"Lin," he hissed. "What are you doing?"
"Finishing it."
He played the first chord.
Then he sang the verse that had not been on the record, the third one, the one Griffin had never heard because Linus had written it the night after Griffin left.
It was about a boy who built a tiger out of paper and gave it away.
