Chapter 12: I Can Hear You Too

I could lie.

I had been lying to him for a week, in the most careful way I knew.

I looked at the hand I was holding, and then I looked up.

"I can hear you," I said.

He didn't blink.

"Since the chapel. The second I touched your hand to take the flowers. I hear what you think."

"I know."

"You know?"

"Not at first." His voice was a thread, and he spent it slowly. "At the altar, I thought it was the drugs. Then you hummed 'Blue Moon' in the dark, and I knew."

My mouth opened.

"I've been listening to you, too," Damian said.

The room tilted.

"What?"

"Since you took my hand. Not everything. Whatever you're feeling hardest. In the chapel I heard you think about your parents' basement. I heard you think about Delaney's bathroom." He took a thin breath. "I heard you think: fifty million dollars."

I let go of his hand.

I stood up so fast the chair went over behind me.

"You heard me."

"Yes."

"The whole time."

"Not the whole time. When you were near. When it was loud." His eyes didn't leave my face. "Every night, Clara. When you lay on that cot and thought about whether you were making a mistake."

I thought of the bath.

I thought of the cloth, and the sheet, and one small private sentence at the end of it.

I wanted him too.

My whole body went hot, and then cold.

"You heard that."

"Yes," he said, very softly.

"You let me think..."

"I let you think what you needed to. I was a man who couldn't move. You were the only person in this house who read me the market, and I didn't know if you'd stay if you thought I was listening."

"You pretended," I said. "You thought 'coincidence.' You thought it, on purpose, so I wouldn't know."
