Chapter 13: What He Hid

Damian's POV

The cot was empty, and the lavender oil had gone cold in its dish.

I lay still and listened to Clara through the wall.

She was in the guest wing, three doors down, and she was thinking about my mouth.

I kept very quiet, so she wouldn't feel me hear it.

At midnight the door opened, and my mother came in with a man behind her.

Kent Gainsborough had been my assistant for nine years.

He was thirty-four, he wore the same gray coat in every season, and he was the only person from the office who had kept visiting after the first month.

He stopped at the foot of the bed.

"Sir," he said.

"Kent," I whispered.

He sat down on the cot so hard it creaked.

My mother put a hand on his shoulder and said nothing.

"Three months," Kent said. His voice shook. "I read you the quarterlies, and I never knew."

"You did know. I blinked at you."

"You blinked at everything. I thought it was the drugs."

"The trust," I said. "Is it still in her name?"

Kent wiped his face with his sleeve and sat up straight.

"Since the second day after the wedding," he said. "Fifty million, and she can't be talked out of it, forced out of it, or divorced out of it. Your mother signed with her power of attorney. I asked you if you wanted that, and you blinked yes until I believed you."

"I wanted to be sure you understood."

"I understood, sir. Does she know?"

"No."

My mother looked at me.

"Damian, why haven't you told her?"

"She said keep it until I can sign my own name."

I breathed in.

"If she knows it's already hers, she'll take it and go. If she thinks I still owe it, she stays to collect."
