Chapter 24: The Hundredth Day

On the hundredth morning the cemetery on Tianping Mountain was white with frost, and the ginkgoes along the path had gone bare.

Shen Ke walked up the stone steps in a plain grey coat, not the black tunic, with the old master's wheelchair rolling beside him.

The old man had a rug over his knees and a new dialysis schedule, which he complained of daily.

"The incline is bad for my kidneys," said the old master.

"Your kidneys are in a machine, Shifu."

"Then it is bad for the machine."

Behind them came the Old Madam on her black cane, with Qin Wanyi at her arm and the old lawyer carrying the thermos.

Hanzhou walked ahead of them all, alone, with a small black box in both hands.

His father's ashes weighed almost nothing, and he carried them.

At the top of the hill, under a pine, stood a grey stone with a woman's name cut into it.

The grave beside it had been dug the day before, and the earth around it was dark and raw.

Hanzhou stopped in front of the first stone.

He stood there for a long time with his back very straight.
