Chapter 19: The Offer

I walked out of the valley with blood drying on my face, and I was shaking all the way to the fence.

Mercy had the truck at the gate with the door open.

"Go ahead and get in," she said. "Or kill something. I'll wait."

"Give me a minute."

"Take as many as you like."

She climbed back into the cab and shut the door and turned on the radio very loud.

I stood in the dark at the chain-link with my hands around the wire.

Boots crunched on the gravel behind me.

"Don't," I said.

"I will not touch you."

"I know you won't. That's not what I mean." I turned. "A marriage of the clans."

Dacre stopped six feet off.

He had taken off his coat and carried it on his arm, and in the dark his face was all hollows.

"I have not agreed to anything," he said.

"You haven't said no," I said.

"I said nothing to anyone. I have said nothing since the Court. I am not accustomed to being given orders in front of my own people."

"Nobody gave you an order. They gave you an invoice."

He didn't answer.

"A political marriage," I said. "To the silver-haired man's daughter, or his niece, or whoever's spare. A seat at your right hand, a name on a paper, and an alliance with the south. I left one not two weeks ago. I put a knife through it in front of three hundred wolves."
