Chapter 14: The Safe
I drove to Park Point with the lawyer's notice on the passenger seat.
The Ekdahl house stood at the end of the sandbar road, white clapboard with a porch and a view of the ship canal.
Greta opened the door before I knocked.
She was in a pressed cardigan, with her pearls on and her silver hair set.
She looked like she hadn't slept either.
"You've brought my letter back," she said.
"I've brought a question."
"I don't discuss the case without my lawyer."
"It isn't a case." I held up the notice. "You sent a man to my workplace at eight in the morning, hours after I moved into a different building. Somebody told you where I slept, Greta. I'd like to know who."
Her hand went to the pearls.
I had noticed it at her Sunday table.
She touched them when she was telling me something that wasn't so.
"Trevor has friends at the harbor," she said. "They saw your car."
"They didn't see my car, because it never left the yard. A man on a boat would have seen the light go on in the cabin." I stepped past her into the hall. "Your son has someone on the water with a camera."
"That's absurd."
"He took a photograph through the loft window, and you saw it before I did."
She didn't answer.
The hall smelled of lemon polish and something boiled.
A framed photograph hung by the stairs: Olaf in a captain's cap, with his arm around a boy of about seventeen who looked straight at the camera and not at him.
