I Didn't Marry Him, I Married The One He Hated novel · Chapter 23 of 24

Chapter 23: Stay

Trevor stood in the gravel with Shelby's keys at his feet and two hundred phones on him.

Shelby's keys lay where they had landed, and he did not pick them up.

He couldn't have driven if he had.

Nobody told him to leave, and nobody offered him a ride.

The crowd just stood there, quiet and ashamed for him, and the lanterns swung over their heads.

Then Greta came down the steps of the stage.

She walked through the gravel in her good shoes and stopped in front of her son.

"Get in my car," she said. "I will drive you home."

"Mom."

"On Monday morning," she said, "we are going to the sheriff's office. You will tell it again, with your own mouth, to a man with a pen. I will sit beside you."

"They'll put me in jail."

"Probably," Greta said. "Magnus went for eleven months."

Trevor's face crumpled.

I looked away, because I found I did not want to watch it.

I had waited a long time to see him lose, and now that I had, it felt small and quiet.

Greta took his arm.

At the gate she stopped and looked back across the yard at her stepson.

Magnus stood with his hands at his sides.

She said nothing more.

She walked her son out to her own car, and with her back straight and her pearls untouched, she drove him away.

The reporter reached us first.

Her notebook was open, and her pen wasn't moving.

"Mr. Ekdahl," she said. "Would you like to make a statement?"

Magnus considered it.

"My father asked me to lie, and I loved him, and I did," he said. "I'm not asking anyone to be sorry for me. I'd like the paper to print the foreman's name, the one he's earned. And I'd like it to print that my wife's name is Linnea Nygren, and she kept it."
