Chapter 26: The Board
"Then I'll find one," I said.
"Where?"
"I don't know yet. Come back to bed."
"I'm still angry."
"So am I. Come back anyway."
He stood there a second longer.
Then he shut the laptop, came around to his side, and lay down on top of the covers in his T-shirt.
Neither of us said sorry.
Some time before dawn his fingers found mine on the sheet.
I didn't look at the clock. I knew what it said.
The full board met at nine that morning, in open session.
Margaret's lawyer had demanded it.
Staff could attend. So could the press.
The boardroom on the top floor had chairs along every wall and people standing in the doorway.
Residents. Nurses off the night shift. The chief of cardiac surgery. A newspaper reporter with a notebook on her knee.
Margaret sat at the end of the walnut table in navy, with her lawyer beside her.
She was suspended, not removed. She still had the right to speak before the vote.
Nathaniel sat in the last chair against the back wall.
