Chapter 19: Five
I didn't answer him that night.
In the morning I asked Tilly.
"Daddy wants to come to your birthday," I said. "Just for a little while. You don't have to say yes."
She stopped chewing.
"Is he going to take me in the boat?"
"No, baby. Never."
"Is Eli going to be there?"
"Yes."
"And Nan?"
"And Nan. And me. The whole time."
She thought about it with her spoon in her mouth.
"Okay," she said. "But he can't have any cake."
I texted Bradley back.
Sunday. Two o'clock. Nan's shack. One hour. You don't bring anyone.
He wrote back in under a minute.
Thank you.
On Sunday the shack was full of shark balloons.
Nan had closed the restaurant for the afternoon. There were twelve kids from the preschool, and their parents, and a cake shaped like a bull shark with gummy fish in its mouth.
Tilly wore a blue dress with sharks on it and her guardian-angel locket.
At two o'clock exactly, a car pulled into the gravel lot.
Bradley got out alone.
He had a present under his arm, wrapped in pink paper with a big bow.
