Chapter 6: The Last Call

I lay in the dark for what felt like an hour, saving my breath.

Then I held the phone up to the crack in the wall again and dialed my father.

He picked up on the second ring.

"What is it?"

I pressed the red button.

"Dad. It's Jesse."

"I know who it is. Your mother says you called her crying." His voice was flat. "Are you ready to behave?"

"I'm not calling for that."

"Then why are you calling?"

"I'm at the farm, and I'm locked in a shed. I'm bleeding and I can't stand up."

"Jesse."

"They won't take me to a hospital. You told them I was lying."

There was a long breath on the line.

"Those people can't let you come back unless I say so," he said. "That is the arrangement. You'll sleep wherever they put you until you've learned something."

"I haven't asked to come back."

"Good."

I laughed, and it hurt so much that I had to wait before I could talk again.

"Dad," I said. "I'm not asking for anything. I'm calling to tell you something."

"I don't have time for this."

"I'm going to die."

The line went silent.

I could hear him breathing, and somewhere behind him a piano began to play a slow piece.

"Don't be dramatic," Dad said.

"I'm not. I told you what I have. Nobody listened."

"Enough," he said. "Your brother is practicing. Call me when you're ready to talk like an adult."
