Chapter 9: The Corridor
Two officers held Mom by the arms while she screamed my name at the ceiling.
Dad turned from the table without a word and walked out into the corridor.
I floated after him.
At the far end of the hall, a pair of deputies was walking the farmer and his wife toward a side door.
The farmer's hands were cuffed in front of him, and his wife was crying.
Dad's assistant stood beside the water fountain with his coat over his arm.
Cade was next to him.
He must have come in the assistant's car, because he had a wet handkerchief pressed to his mouth and tears running over it.
Dad didn't see any of them but the farmer.
He crossed the corridor and took the man by the front of his shirt.
"You animals," he said. "I told you to take care of him. What did you do to my son?"
He punched him in the face.
The farmer's head snapped sideways, and the deputies lunged for Dad's arms.
"Mr. Rittenhouse!"
"What did you do to him?"
The farmer spat blood onto the floor.
"What are you hitting me for?" he shouted. "You paid us! Your assistant said the boy wouldn't behave in the city! He said to discipline him, and we could be as rough as we wanted as long as we didn't kill him!"
