Chapter 19: The Buyers
Hollis's POV
I woke on the office floor with Ward's hand on my chest and a chant coming through the wall.
I could not make out the word at first.
Then I could.
"Dispatch," the crowd was saying, over and over, three thousand voices. "Dispatch. Dispatch."
"Stay down," Ward said.
"Where is she?"
"Out front. She's all right. You're the one who dropped on the floor."
"Ward."
"You can walk if you can stand," he said. "I won't carry you. I'm injured."
I stood.
My ribs burned, and the burn had spread up my neck in branching lines, but my legs held.
I went down the corridor and through the gym, where Abel had two hundred people on cots in rows, with the smallest children at the front.
A cardiologist sat on the floor at the back with a toddler in her lap.
I went out through the main doors into the white afternoon.
The black SUV sat nose-down in the broken fence with its engine dead.
Someone had let the air out of the tires.
The crowd stood around it in a ring, quiet now, and in the middle of the ring Lorraine Pruitt stood by the open driver's door, with her cardigan torn.
The steel cash box lay open at her feet.
Money had spilled across the gravel, in white envelopes with names written on them.
The man from the lobby who had paid six thousand dollars stood over the box.
He picked up an envelope, and read the name aloud, and held it out to a woman at the front.
"That's mine," the woman said.
