Chapter 12: The Winch
Miss Lorraine looked better at dusk.
The gray had gone out of her paint in the low light, and the creek behind her glowed copper.
Rhett had run a hose over her deck, and the steel was dark and wet under my shoes.
He had worked on her all week, and I could tell by how he walked her.
He touched every rail on the way.
"Welcome aboard, Doc," he said.
"Thank you, Captain," I said.
"Say that again."
"Captain."
He grinned and caught my hand and pulled me against the rail.
The dock lights came on behind him, one by one.
He put both hands on my waist and kissed me, long and slow, with the whole creek watching.
Somewhere a gull cried.
I held on to the front of his shirt.
He tasted of coffee, and the engine grease on his hands smelled of home.
"I've wanted to do that on this deck for four months," he said.
"You've done it now."
"I'm going to do it again."
He did, and I let him.
Over his shoulder I saw Boone on the dock, standing at the end of the gangway with his hat in both hands.
