Chapter 16: Toomer
I came up the hatch ladder in Rhett's oilskin coat with nothing on under it.
The sky over Shem Creek had gone pale pink at the edges, and the gulls were already working the pilings.
Garland Toomer stood on the aft deck with his clipboard against his chest.
He wore the quilted vest, and his sunburned neck was red above the collar.
He looked at the coat.
He looked at my bare feet on his steel.
"Well," he said. "The nurse."
Rhett came up the ladder behind me in his jeans, with his shirt in his fist.
Boone followed him, shirtless, with the red marks still on both wrists.
They did not stand in front of me.
They stood on either side, close, so that Toomer had to look at all three of us at once.
"Mr. Toomer," I said. "You're on my patients' boat."
"My dock," he said. "My slip. My night man called me at four, because he saw a little white car in my lot at midnight, and he knows whose it is."
