Chapter 19: Rhett's POV: Low Tide
Rhett's POV
Doc's grandmother put me at the head of the table and sat Boone on my left and her granddaughter across from the pair of us.
That told me what Gran thought before she said a word.
The house on Sol Legare was low and white with a blue door and a kitchen where two grown people could not pass each other.
She had cooked for six hours.
There was red rice and fried whiting and okra soup, and a pan of cornbread with a crust that rang when she set it down.
I ate three helpings and was told that was the least I could do.
Gran was seventy-nine, small and straight, with white hair wrapped in a blue cloth.
She watched every forkful go in and did not blink.
"Captain," she said. "How is the knee?"
"Holds, ma'am."
"Octavia says it holds. Octavia says a lot of things." She turned her eyes on Boone. "And the shoulder?"
"Good, ma'am," Boone said.
"You don't talk much."
"No, ma'am."
"Good. I don't trust a man who does." She set down her fork. "Now. I am an old woman and I'll ask it plain."
Doc said, "Gran."
"Be quiet, child. I'm asking them."
The kitchen clock ticked.
"What do two men want with one woman?" Gran said.
I had expected the question since the front step.
I put my hands flat on the tablecloth.
"Ma'am, I thought I wanted her to fix my leg," I said. "Then I thought I wanted her to put me back on the boat. Then I wanted her on my porch." I stopped. "I want her to say yes when I ask her to go to the grocery store with me. I want that every day."
