Chapter 17: Hunter's Moon
I nearly went through the grate.
Rhoda caught my ankle from below.
"Get down, girl."
"They've got him."
"I can see they've got him. Get down before somebody sees your face in the window."
The enforcers hauled Tobin up the steps.
He dug his heels into every one.
At the top he twisted round and spat at Ansel's feet.
Ansel didn't even look at him. He was smiling at the council cars.
The doors closed behind them.
I got down off the barrel.
My legs wouldn't hold me, so I sat on the cellar floor in the dust.
"He'll stall," Rhoda said, crouching beside me. "That boy's got your mouth. He'll stall till Christmas."
"He's sixteen."
"So were you once. You stalled your father out of that wedding for a whole year."
I had.
I'd forgotten.

The twins found the stairs in the dark.
At the top there was a narrow door, old oak, with a keyhole the size of my thumb.
On the other side was the great hall.
