Chapter 24: Harvest Run
The hearing was set for noon.
I could have put it off.
Nobody would have blamed me. Half the pack told me to make him wait a year.
I didn't.
The whole point of the hall was that nobody waited a year.
By noon every bench was full, and people stood three deep along the pine walls.
Tobin sat in the front row with his arms crossed.
Rhoda sat beside him with her black bag on her knees.
Beck stood at the back by the door. He didn't sit. He never sat at a hearing.
I took the chair by the hearth.
My father's chair, carried up the valley in the baker's truck.
"Bring him in," I said.
The warden opened the door from the gate side.
Ansel walked in.
Two months in the caves had done what I knew they would.
His face had gone gray and loose, and his dark hair had grown out ragged.
He wore the same coarse gray shirt every exile wore, and cave boots cracked at the toes.
He saw the room, and stopped.
Then he saw me in my father's chair, and something in his face pulled tight.
"Sit down," I said.
There was a stool in front of the hearth.
He sat on it.
"You asked to be heard," I said. "So I'm listening. Take as long as you need. Nobody will interrupt you."
