Chapter 14: The Cellar

I had one Brodie number left in my phone that might still pick up.

The second son answered on the fourth ring.

I could hear an engine idling and a radio playing low.

"Lainey," he said. Just that.

"Where's Lorne?"

There was a pause long enough to drive a truck through.

"Dad said he left at three," he said. "Dad said he walked back to you."

"He didn't."

Another pause.

The radio clicked off.

"I'm at the shop," he said. "What do you need?"

"You and the twins at the trailhead in an hour. Not Beckett."

"Lainey, if Dad finds out..."

"Your little brother hasn't answered his phone in four hours," I said. "Pick."

He hung up.

I didn't know which way he'd picked until I got there.

Keir walked me to the river and stopped at the edge of the water.

If the Black Fork Alpha set foot on Larch Ridge land at night, it was war by sunrise.

"One hour," he said. "Then I come across, and Conrad can have his war."

"Two."

"One, Ketter."

I swam the Tamarack as a wolf, in the dark.

The second son's truck sat at the trailhead with its lights off.
