Chapter 9: The Forecast

Nate's POV

I told her in the car on the way down the hill, because I'd rather say a thing badly than let someone else say it well.

"In March I called Mallory about the order," I said. "I told her I was done making the blue ones."

Anneliese sat in the passenger seat with her wrists in her lap, still stained.

"Why?"

"Because the blue comes off on a woman's hands, and I'd been handing it to her for six years under another man's name."

"That's not much to threaten you with."

"I also said I'd looked you up," I said. "Your school's spring mural was on the district page. You were standing in front of it with paint on your face."

She turned to look at me.

"I said I'd like to meet you," I said. "That's all of it. Mallory said it was strange, and she'd tell you if I didn't deliver."

Anneliese was quiet for a while.

"It's not strange," she said. "It's a little strange."

"Okay."

"I'm glad you said it, though," she said. "You're the first person this week who said the worst thing first."

I dropped her at Frances's gate, and she didn't look back.

I drove to the shop with my hands tight on the wheel.

It was four o'clock.

The party was at seven.

In the cold room behind the shop, I kept the stock for a wedding that had been canceled in the spring and never rebooked.

Two hundred stems of delphinium.
