Chapter 12: Offer

I read the first line four times.

Then I read the rest of it once, fast, in my pajama pants by the mailboxes.

Jocelyn was still on the phone in my other hand.

"Mari? Mari, are you crying again? Is that happy crying?"

"I got in," I said. "Joss. London. I got in."

She screamed so loud I had to hold the phone away from my ear.

The man from 2B came out to see what had happened, saw my face and gave me a thumbs up.

Abel came over at nine with two coffees from a real café and Gehry in a Christmas bandana.

I handed him the letter at the door.

He read it standing up.

I watched his face while he did.

For one second, maybe less, it fell.

All of it, all at once, the way a kid's does.

Then it came back up into the biggest smile I'd ever seen on him.

"You did it," he said. "You actually did it."

"You told me to get a better ruler."

"I told you that ruler was chipped at the forty." He put the letter down very carefully on my drafting table, like it might break. "This is the best thing I've ever read. Including the instructions for Gehry's flea medicine, which were very moving."

"It starts in September."

"I know when it starts."

He sat down on my one chair.

I sat on the floor in front of him.

"You got in too," I said. "Once."

"I got in." He turned his coffee cup around in his hands. "It was the week my dad's scans came back. I had the acceptance in one hand and the oncologist's number in the other. Easy choice."

"Was it?"

"It was the right one." He smiled a little. "Doesn't mean it was easy."

I opened the portal on my laptop.

The Accept button was big and green.
