Chapter 18: Fellowship

Abel stopped with the spatula in the air.

"Did you check the logs?" I said into the phone. "You told me on the porch you would."

"I checked."

"And?"

"Admin viewed the hallway on October 9 for fourteen minutes." "Curtis says he was testing a firmware update that night. The update went out the next morning. I checked that too. It did."

"So he has an answer."

"He always has an answer." A long breath. "I'm not blind, Marisol. I'm watching him. I'm also not going to throw out the man who stood next to me for eleven years because of a log."

"Then don't," I said. "Just keep watching."

I hung up.

Abel put down the spatula.

"He has to make it happen," he said quietly. "And now he's going to be standing at the altar while he does it."

The letter came the second week of April.

Abel didn't tell me it was coming.

He'd applied in January, to a one-year design fellowship in London, and told nobody but his mother.

He opened it at his drafting table while I was eating cereal on his bed.

Then he turned around in his chair, very slowly.
