Chapter 6: The Boyfriend
Jocelyn shrieked.
A nurse put her head in the door, saw nobody was dying and left again.
Esteban lowered his phone.
"Seeing who?"
"Someone."
"You're always at school or in your room." He said it to Jocelyn, not to me. "She wouldn't even live in the dorms freshman year. She's not seeing anyone. She's attached to the house."
To the house.
He meant to him.
We all heard it.
Jocelyn's eyebrows went up under the beanie.
"Esteban."
"What? It's true."
"It was true when I was eighteen and had nowhere else to go," I said. "I'm twenty-three now."
"Then who is he?"
My mind went completely white.
I knew exactly four men by name who weren't professors.
One was in this room.
One was my dead foster brother.
One was a guy in my studio who ate raw onions.
"Abel," I said.
Jocelyn sat straight up so fast her IV pole rattled.
"Abel?" she said. "Tall Abel? Glasses Abel? Abel with the dog named after a building?"
Oh no.
"Gehry," I said faintly.
"ABEL WHITFORD?" She grabbed my sleeve. "Mari. That's my guy. That's the guy I was setting you up with!"
The universe had a sense of humor and it was terrible.
"Small world," I said.
"How long?"
"A few weeks. We met in the library. He borrowed my ruler."
Technically true.
"He never said a word at work! He sits ten feet from me! I'm going to kill him." She was already reaching for her phone. "No, I'm going to feed him first. Then I'll kill him."
"Joss, don't text him."
"I'm texting him."
"Please don't text him."
