Chapter 10: Face to Face

Ysmae bribed the customs sweep with a case of Dar brandy and a look that could strip paint.

By midnight, three of her crew were swarming over Loose Change with plates and welders.

I had been told, politely, to get out of the way.

"Sleep," she told me, at the foot of the stairs to the Rusty Anchor. "Both of you. The repair takes until dawn."

"I don't sleep during repairs."

"You will tonight."

She looked at the cord on my wrist, and then up at my face.

"He has not slept a full night in nine years," she said, very low. "If he does, it will be with you."

I went up the stairs with that in my chest.

Havrik was standing at the window of the little room with his bandages off.

His palms were healed to new, shiny skin, blue as ever, and he turned them over slowly in the light.

"Ysmae's salve," he said. "It is good."

"You're a menace with a door."

"I am."

I shut the door behind me and leaned against it.

There was a real bed in the room, wide and soft, with a quilt somebody's grandmother had made.
