Chapter 7: Breach
I ran toward the galley, and the air ran with me.
Decompression is a sound before it's a feeling.
It's a roar, a rising howl, as the pressure in the whole ship pours toward a hole.
"Sealing doors," Biscuit said. "The galley hatch is jammed, Captain. The motor is dead."
"Manual!"
I hit the corridor at a sprint with the wind tearing at my jacket.
The galley hatch hung half open on its track.
Through the gap I could see the hole, a ragged black wound in the outer wall where the sink had been.
The galley table was gone.
Cups and cutlery and a pair of my socks were streaming out into space.
And on the far wall, in its plastic sleeve, my father's chart was flapping on one pin.
I didn't think.
I went through the gap.
The wind took my feet off the deck, and I hit the wall with my shoulder.
I grabbed the chart in both fists and ripped it free.
The pin tore through the sleeve.
"Inez!"
A hand closed around my belt and hauled me backward with one yank, so hard my teeth clicked.
I flew through the hatch with the chart clutched against my chest.
I landed on top of Havrik on the corridor deck.
