Chapter 8: Hob's Rest
Hob's Rest is a moon the size of a bad idea, and every pier on it smells of fuel and fried onions.
I limped Loose Change down onto pier five with her galley sealed off and her pride in shreds.
Pier six held a long black Dar warship with a name in gold script on her nose.
Ember.
A woman was standing at the bottom of her ramp with her arms folded, and she did not look pleased.
She was tall, spare and grey-skinned, with silver braids pinned up in a crown and a stiff left leg.
Her eyes were black from corner to corner, and they went straight to Havrik and then, slowly, to me.
I put my chin up.
"Warlord," she said, in Concord common, which I hadn't expected. "You look terrible."
"Ysmae."
"You have burned your hands."
"A hatch."
"A hatch," she said, as if it were an insult, and took them in hers.
She turned them over, looked at the raw palms, then looked at me over the top of them.
Her expression hardened, turning sad and very old.
Then it cleared.
"This is the pilot," she said.
"Inez Quintana," I said, and held out my hand.
She looked at it.
She didn't take it.
"You are smaller than I expected," Ysmae said.
