Chapter 9: Bounty
I went after Piet Haldane through the Rusty Anchor's back door, and into a dozen bounty hunters.
The alley behind the bar was narrow, wet and full of steam.
Piet was nowhere.
A short ugly shuttle was lifting off the end of pier four.
I would have bet my ship he was aboard it.
"Piet!" I yelled at the sky.
"Pilot Quintana," said a voice behind me.
I turned.
Twelve people stood across the mouth of the alley, in mismatched armour with stun poles at their hips.
They had the particular grin of people who've been told the pay is very good.
The one in front wore a Concord captain's old coat, and he held up a slate with my face on it.
"Two million credits," he said. "Alive and talking."
"Talking about what?"
"I don't ask. I just collect."
"You'll have to catch me," I said, and I ran.
I got three steps before a pole caught me across the shoulder, and the world flashed white.
I hit the wet ground on my knees.
The hunter stepped over me and reached for my collar, and a blue hand closed on his wrist.
