Chapter 13: The Second Drug
The oncologist put the scan on her screen and turned it so I could see.
"The nodes shrank after the first cycle," she said. "Then they came back. The first drug has stopped working."
Marla sat beside me with her folder still in her lap, and her pen did not move.
"What now?" I asked.
"A different drug. One carries a poison straight to the cancer cells, and the other wakes up your own defenses."
"Does that one work?"
"Often, for people the first one failed." She did not soften it. "It's harder on the body in the first hours, and you can have a bad reaction on the first dose."
"How bad?"
"Chills, fever, a tight throat. We treat it fast. But someone must stay with you for the first twenty-four hours, an adult who can call us."
"I'll do it," Marla said.
"You have a deposition at two," I said.
"I'll move it."
"You won't. Your client is a man who has waited eight months to be heard."
She pressed her lips together and did not argue, which told me she knew I was right.
When I came out of the exam room with the new orders in my hand, Dexter was sitting in the lobby.
He had followed us from the office in his own car.
He sat in a plastic chair with his hands on his knees, not touching his phone, and he stood up when he saw me.
"I'm not here to ask for anything," he said.
"Then why are you here?"
"The nurse said there's a form with a name on it. If you need a name, I'm a name."
