Chapter 13: The Brother Who Filed Her Away

Patrick hands me the folder before I ask him anything else.

'Look at the figures first, Nell. Then ask me what you came to ask.'

The folder contains four years of rental returns, each page marked with Patrick's neat blue handwriting. The figures are correct. That makes the lie easier to see.

Cormac stands by the kitchen table with his pencil beside the cold tea. He has given Patrick the chair facing the door. Patrick has chosen the one with his back to the window.

'I prepared these,' Patrick says. 'Gregor sent me the statements and the figures.'

'From the account held in my name?'

'He had access to the household records.'

Patrick uses the phrase carefully. It has been polished before he brought it here.

I open the first return. The rental income is recorded under my name. The account index is written in the margin.

I knew the label before I saw the page. I let my eyes pass over it without pause.

'What did you understand the income to be?'

'Joint property income.'

'What document told you that?'

Patrick glances at Cormac. Cormac does not help him.

'It was the arrangement,' Patrick says.

'Between whom?'

'Between you and Gregor.'

'Who gave you that arrangement?'

He rubs his thumb over the folder's spine. He used to do that before asking me for money, when his accountancy course had reached another fee and another emergency.

'Gregor explained that your father intended to transfer the house after your marriage,' he says. 'He said the paperwork had been delayed.'

'And you accepted his explanation.'

'You were married. The deposits were being used for the household. It was not an unusual position.'

'You filed the income under my name.'

'Because the account was in your name.'

The answer is almost useful. Patrick has just confirmed the record he came to soften.
