Chapter 23: The Keys With a Price
Elena takes the ring of keys from Cormac and places it in my open hand before reading the first condition.
The metal is cold. There are four keys, a brass fob, and a fresh white tag marked ASHFORD HOUSE in block capitals.
'Condition one,' Elena says. 'You confirm the sale documents are regular and complete.'
The keys settle against my palm.
Cormac stands beside the desk with his satchel at his feet. He has not touched me since we left his flat. That is deliberate. It is also making me aware of every inch between us.
'Condition two,' Elena continues. 'You release the buyers, their conveyancer, Cormac's firm, and every employee or agent connected with the transaction from all claims.'
She turns the page.
'Condition three. You withdraw every complaint or proposed complaint against Gregor Vale and agree not to pursue any further application relating to the property.'
The keys are heavier than they should be. I turn the largest one between my fingers and read the teeth.
The house is being offered back to me in exchange for my signature beneath its own erasure.
Cormac's solicitor sent the keys with a covering letter. The letter uses words such as practical, immediate, and proportionate. I have learned to be suspicious of anything called proportionate by a person asking me to surrender a legal claim.
'And the final condition?' I ask.
Elena slides the page closer. 'You acknowledge that possession is granted as a matter of accommodation and does not amount to an admission of ownership.'
