I place the house keys on Elena Dane's desk. Then I turn to Cormac.
'Sit beside me for the final filing.'
The compliance officer still holds the torn endorsement page. One half hangs from her fingers. The other lies beside Elena's keyboard.
Cormac studies both pieces before taking the chair next to mine. He leaves a careful space between us.
That space is professional. It is also dishonest.
Elena draws the filing screen towards her. 'We are sending the documents in the order you specified.'
'Yes.'
'Forensic report first.'
'Its document list and page references first,' I say. 'Then the signature findings. The deed from the safe deposit box follows. Then the transcript, Patrick's sworn account, and the interim order.'
The compliance officer looks at me. 'You want the recording transcript after the forensic material?'
'I want the sequence preserved. Gregor's sale documents fail first. His ownership story fails second. His account of the rental income fails third. The order follows the evidence, not the drama.'
Elena gives one short nod. 'Good. Drama is expensive.'
Her flask sits beside the monitor. She does not offer it to anyone. I am grateful. The coffee inside has once again survived an attack on its natural state.
Cormac's mouth shifts at one corner.
I do not look at him for long. If I do, the room becomes harder to manage.
Elena opens the evidence sequence. The sealed forensic report appears first, its chain-of-custody label recorded in the filing history. The examiner's page list follows. Both signatures are identified as simulated. Thomas Ashford's signature is included beside mine and Gregor's.
