Chapter 18: The Fitting

The dress shop was on Superior Street, behind a window full of white gowns I would not have been caught dead in.

I went in on Wednesday afternoon with Gio's hand at the small of my back.

I had told him I wanted a dress for Saturday.

He had said I didn't need one, and I had said I knew.

I needed it anyway.

The seamstress was a small woman in her sixties with a measuring tape around her neck and pins in her mouth.

She took one look at my face and my belly and my boots and said nothing about any of it.

She showed me a rack.

I walked past the white ones and the cream ones.

At the back, in plastic, hung a long dress the green of spruce in snow, with a plain neck and sleeves to the wrist.

"That one," I said.

"For a dinner," the seamstress said.

"For a birthday dinner," I said.

"Sixty people."

"Then it needs to be seen," she said, and took it down.

The fitting room was a curtained corner at the back with a three-way mirror and a low stool.

Gio sat in a chair outside the curtain, six feet away, with his coat across his knee.

He had told me in the car what Lorenzo's text meant.

He had said it to the windshield, flat, before I could ask.

Seven years ago he had signed a contract for his father.

It was a small one, a towing agreement with the crew across the harbor.

He had been twenty-seven and sure it was nothing.
