Chapter 7: Steam
Gio's POV
My father kept his study the way other men keep a chapel.
He had a green leather chair, a fire, and a decanter nobody else was allowed to pour.
A photograph of my mother stood on the desk in a silver frame.
I stood in front of the desk with my hands in my coat pockets.
I had not been invited to sit.
"The books are Lorenzo's now," my father said.
"Until the spring.
"That was decided at the table on Friday, while you were out at the yard with your girl."
"The books are mine," I said.
"They were yours.
"A man who cannot control his own house cannot keep the family's money."
"Who told you I can't control my house?"
"Your aunts.
"The girl sat down across from your cousin at breakfast.
"She took the chair of a daughter."
"She took the chair she wanted," I said.
"She's not wrong to."
My father put his glass down.
He was seventy years old and heavy, with white hair and a face that had been called handsome fifty years ago.
It was the face I had spent my whole life trying not to disappoint.
"Giovanni," he said.
"The child is welcome.
"The mother is a tow driver.
"Marry her if you must, but keep her out of the business."
"No," I said.
"I'm not asking," my father said.
"Neither am I," I said.
"She stays where she wants to stay.
"She goes where she wants to go.
"If anyone in this family puts a hand on her, or on what she's carrying, I'll answer it myself, and I won't ask your permission first."
He studied me for a long time.
I had never said that to him in my life.
I saw him decide something, and I did not know what, and it frightened me more than shouting would have.
