Chapter 22: Hospital
The surgeon said the blade had missed everything that mattered by the width of a thumb.
"He's lucky," she said. "The old scar took most of it. Somebody sewed that very well."
"I did," I said.
She looked at my hands.
"Then I'm going to tell you to go home and sleep. He'll be asleep for six hours."
I did not go home.
I sat in the vinyl chair beside his bed.
The lantern pin was in my pocket and a vending machine coffee went cold in my lap.
At six in the morning, he woke up.
He didn't open his eyes right away.
He lay still and listened.
"Morwen," he said.
"How?"
"You breathe through your nose when you're angry."
"I'm not angry."
"You're furious." He turned his head on the pillow. "Good. Say it."
I put the coffee down.
"I want to say it all at once and I can't," I said. "I want to start at the top and go slowly."
"Then start at the top."
I took a breath.
"Five years ago, I woke up alone in a linen room with your blazer on me and my pin gone.
